Laser Hair Reduction Pre- & Post-Care Guide

At Smooth & Dazzling Studio, your safety, physical comfort, and long-term hair reduction results are our absolute priorities. Achieving the smoothest possible results is a true partnership between you and your specialist.

Because we utilize the advanced Candela GentleMax Pro Plus laser system, our treatments are highly efficient and safe across all skin complexions. However, following these straightforward pre- and post-care steps is essential to protect your skin, maximize your comfort, and ensure a seamless, successful session.

Before Your Appointment: Preparation

Proper preparation ensures the laser energy can precisely target the hair root without irritating the surface of your skin.

1. Shave Thoroughly (Within 24 Hours)

  • The Rule: Completely and cleanly shave the entire area being treated less than 24 hours before your scheduled appointment.
  • Why it matters: The laser targets the pigment below the skin line. If there is visible hair above the skin, it wastes the laser’s energy and increases surface heat.
  • Pro-Tip: For large surface zones like Full Legs or a Full Back, allow yourself extra time the evening before your visit. (Please note: The area must be pre-shaved to avoid in-office prep delays or rescheduling.)

2. Stop Plucking, Waxing, and Threading (4 to 6 Weeks Prior)

  • The Rule: Discontinue all root-pulling hair removal methods 4 to 6 weeks before your session.
  • Why it matters: The laser requires the hair root to be physically present inside the follicle to destroy it. Shaving is the only acceptable method of hair removal between your sessions.

3. Avoid UV Exposure and Tanning (2 Weeks Prior)

  • The Rule: Strictly avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and all self-tanning creams or sprays for at least 2 weeks leading up to your treatment.
  • Why it matters: Tanned skin changes how the laser energy interacts with your tissue, which can compromise your safety and the effectiveness of the session. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen if you are spending time outdoors in the Austin sun.

4. Arrive with Clean Skin

  • The Rule: Please arrive at your session with completely clean skin.
  • Why it matters: The treated area must be 100% free of makeup, lotions, deodorants, perfumes, and body oils. For facial treatments like the Upper Lip or Full Face, arriving bare-faced ensures we can step right into your unhurried care.

After Your Appointment: Recovery

There is zero downtime associated with our laser hair reduction treatments, meaning you can return to your day immediately. However, your skin follicles will remain sensitive to heat and friction for a short window.

What is Normal?

  • The Sunburn Sensation: Many clients experience mild redness and minor swelling around the hair follicles (known as folliculitis) immediately following a session. This is completely normal, looks like minor goosebumps, and typically fades within a few hours to a few days.
  • Sensitive Areas: Delicates zones like the Brazilian or Underarms may remain slightly tender for 24 to 48 hours.

For the First 24 to 48 Hours, AVOID:

  • Intense Heat: Stay away from hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs. Use lukewarm water when bathing.
  • Heavy Friction & Sweat: Avoid intense exercise, heavy workouts, and tight synthetic clothing that traps sweat and rubs against the skin. This prevents unnecessary irritation to the active follicles.
  • Harsh Products: Do not apply chemical exfoliants, retinoids, or highly fragranced body lotions to the treated area. For underarm sessions, wait until any redness subsides before applying strong clinical deodorants.

Sun Protection is Mandatory

  • The Rule: Keep treated skin completely out of the sun and apply a zinc-based, broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily to any exposed areas (especially the face, neck, and arms).
  • Why it matters: Your skin is temporarily more vulnerable to UV damage post-treatment. Protecting it ensures an even complexion and smooth recovery.

What Happens Next? (The Shedding Phase)

Over the next 1 to 3 weeks, you will notice the treated hairs slowly rising to the surface and shedding from the follicle. This can sometimes look like new hair growth, but it is actually your body pushing the dead hair out.

  • Let it shed: Do not pluck or pull these hairs. Let them fall out naturally.
  • Gently exfoliate: You can gently use a washcloth in the shower after 48 hours to help speed up the shedding process.
  • Stay consistent: Because hair growth cycles occur in waves, staying consistent with your recommended 4-to-8-week session intervals ensures we catch the next cycle at the perfect moment for long-term reduction.

Have Questions Before Your Visit?

Every body is entirely unique, and it is completely normal to feel slightly nervous before your first session. We never rush your questions.
